Summary

A new series about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after。

Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father’s curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic Prince of Hearts。 She knows his powers are mythic, his kiss is worth dying for, and that bargains with him rarely end well。

But when Evangeline learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, she becomes desperate enough to offer the Prince of Hearts whatever he wants in exchange for his help to stop the wedding。 The prince only asks for three kisses。 But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’s pledged。 And he has plans for Evangeline that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy…

I love the Caraval series a lot and this definitely lived up to my expectations。 SO good。

Some thoughts: 1) Kissing chess is the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard of。 2) Evangeline seems nice, but she’s also very annoying at times, and loves to jump to conclusions without any real evidence。 3) The beginning was slow but4) The middle/end part of the book-omg so GOOD! I couldn’t put it down! 5) I can’t wait for the next one!

This was a pleasant surprise, especially not knowing how the ending was going to go (she does leave you hanging a bit for the next book。。。)

I found this to be whimsical and enjoyable as a fairy tale romance。 Super pissed about that cliffhanger。 My warning is that though this reads like a playful story, this is a fairytale in the sense that the characters care not at all about consent (there is a lot of without- permission touching, kissing, grabbing, biting, etc that is meant to be sexy)。 So I wouldn’t not give this to a young person without that conversation, because it was pretty icky in spots。 (Not as bad as A Court of Thorns and I found this to be whimsical and enjoyable as a fairy tale romance。 Super pissed about that cliffhanger。 My warning is that though this reads like a playful story, this is a fairytale in the sense that the characters care not at all about consent (there is a lot of without- permission touching, kissing, grabbing, biting, etc that is meant to be sexy)。 So I wouldn’t not give this to a young person without that conversation, because it was pretty icky in spots。 (Not as bad as A Court of Thorns and Roses, but still not awesome to find in YA)。 。。。more

WHAAAAAAAATTT!!??!?!?I thought this book was a stand alone (insert crying emoji because now I have to wait years for this story to be completed but I'm also happy because I get to see more Evangeline and Jacks)。But oh ma gershh! Jack what a manipulative bastard! I had competely forgotten that Donatella made his heart beat again in Caraval, which in that didn't seem like an enormous deal。 But after getting to know Jacks more in this OUaBH, goodness that's a HUUGE deal。 I can not believe WHATTT!!! I had competely forgotten that Donatella made his heart beat again in Caraval, which in that didn't seem like an enormous deal。 But after getting to know Jacks more in this OUaBH, goodness that's a HUUGE deal。 I can not believe that Jacks orchestrated this whole god damn thing。 What is behind the valory arch anyways that's so important to him (see questions like these make me wanna shake my fist at the amazing Ms。Gerber for making this a series but also at myself because it literally says in the title "#1" which insinuates this is a series and which I obviously totally missed)。 Jacks gave Evangeline the blood to poison Apollo, though he did warn her from "trying to be the hero" but he knew she would never leave Apollo in that state。 When Tiberius "confessed" to the murder saying the tears were only supposed to affect females but that was apparently a lie because they affected Apollo too。 I was just like 'oh yeah you suck Tiberius boo on you for killing your brother'。 I literally did not put two and two together: Evangeline was the only one crying and who would have died from them had Jacks not "helped" (what an ass)。 So what killed Apollo? Not the tears that's for sure。 So then we assume its the Malefic oil because Apollo's body was shiny and that Marisol was the one who did that。 And I was perfectly fine believing that。 UNTIL。。 the coincidences: Jacks reading the same book as Marisol, Jacks taking her to Chaos who tells them a witch asked for malefic oil (which we thought was coating Apollo's body but then if it wasn't that then maybe Apollo slicked up his own body to be all idk sexy or whatever?), and then Luc conveniently also being there to accuse Marisol of being a witch。 OH MY GOSH I JUST THOUGHT OF ANOTHER THING!!! I think Jacks was faking being sleepy。 He wanted Evangeline in his room because that's where the spell book was the one Marisol had as well (remember Chaos said a witch asked for Malefic oil and lo and behold Jacks has the spell book that Marisol was reading disguised as an Archer and the Fox book, a series he knew Evangeline loved and would instantly gravitate towards in his mess of a library)。 So maybe Jacks also wanted Evangeline to make the truth serum recipe so she could clear her names of the crimes (his goal of accusing of her was to make her fulfill the prophecy), and someone else would be charged for his crime。But then why was Jacks acting innocent about Apollo's murderer? He could have come outright and told Evangeline that it was him and used Apollo as leverage。 But it seems like he did all that (making a pact with Evangeline to find out who the killer was, taking her to Chaos) all to point the blame Marisol's way。 But why would he even care to do that? Maybe to keep his identity hidden so he can live peacefully in the North?? But that seems like so much work just to keep his identity hidden something he doesn't even really seem to care about, I think the only reason he became Lord Jacks in the first place was for this Valory Arch and to ensure Evangeline fulfills the prophecy。 And if he now has the the ultimate tool (Apollo as leverage) to open the arch, then why delay? Ugh so much confusion! This was the case for me with the Caraval series too, so much mystery which lead to alot of confusion for me because just like now I kept thinking about what was happening until my thoughts were like a ball of yarn, impossible to unravel with no end in sight。 I shall patiently wait for the next one。。。Should add that I did really like this book just like all of Stephanie Garber's books。 I loved the little notes and newspapers, and the descriptions were *chef's kiss*。 When she was describing the North, with its Spire shops and bridges overhead and tiny dragons, ooh I fell in love and wished I could've been immediately transported there。 Garber creates vibes and atmospheres。 You get sucked into a whole different world。 Some lines I really liked:"She didn't make being alone seem lonely as Evangeline had always feared。 She made it seem like an adventure, as if every moment were the start of a story with endless possibilities"。 - She refers to the fate known as "Unwed Bride" LaLa。 Page 260。"He held on to her as if she were a grudge, his body rigid and tense, as if he really didn't want her there, and yet his arms were tight around her waist as though he had no intention of ever letting her go。"- Page 253。 You begrudgingly love someone。 "But there were reasons powerful emotions didn't vanish in a blink, reasons why a person had to become stronger then her feelings to let them go"。- Page 240。 You may have had a love of friendship you miss, and no you can't just will those feelings away。 you must become stronger than your feelings。 Like Bitterblue said in Winterkeep "i may not be stronger than my situation, but I am stronger than they way this make me feel"。 。。。more

Giving this a 4。5 stars。 Little fox was a little too naive at the worst possible timings。 Love the starting where she first met Jack, and the end of the book when she realise the truth。

I say。。 mas ganahan ko ani kaysa sa Caraval series。 Dili slow pace ang plot, each chapter offers an air of mystery on why the story goes on the way it does。 Unpredictable siya, in short。 A right mix of fantasy and romance。 If you're that kind of person na ganahan ug very magical and fairytale gone wrong vibes, you'll love this。 Although, it seems less descriptive of the magical aspects sa world-building, it focuses more on the characters jud。 Come to think of it。。 busa siguro kaingun ko mas chad I say。。 mas ganahan ko ani kaysa sa Caraval series。 Dili slow pace ang plot, each chapter offers an air of mystery on why the story goes on the way it does。 Unpredictable siya, in short。 A right mix of fantasy and romance。 If you're that kind of person na ganahan ug very magical and fairytale gone wrong vibes, you'll love this。 Although, it seems less descriptive of the magical aspects sa world-building, it focuses more on the characters jud。 Come to think of it。。 busa siguro kaingun ko mas chada siya kaysa Caraval kay natabangan sa Caraval ug establish iyang story -- na introduce na daan ang some characters, established na ang world-building etc。 Dili naka mag grasp sa concept ug di naka mag cringe kayo sa very oa na descriptions sa mga butang-butang。Sa main protagonists, Evangeline akong pinaka bet sa tulo ka main girlies ani na saga。 Kung mas palaban si Donatella, mas palaban si Evangeline para sako or rather。。 she knows how to balance her desire to fight for what is right and to yield to her emotions。 Pero naay isa ka scene maka hahay, pero thankful for that kay ni ship akong sail for her and Jacks。 Speaking of Jacks, ni improve ata iyang character diri。 Or idk, the end part offers a different perspective。 We can't really know unless book two happens (pls be good and be fast book 2 huhu)。 I mean。。 lowkey rooting for his character ever since Caraval series, pero lisod i-justify iyang twisted version of love sa past series。 I guess, gituyo kay there is so much more to offer na story about sa iyang character karun。As usual, i h8 cliffhangers。 Pero yes nalang, as long as the second book will not disappoint。 。。。more

I was sceptical about if we would really get the caraval jacks here。 The blue hair was a big step into the wrong direction btw。But in the end, It wasn’t the biggest mindblowing plottwist, we got him people。 Overall this book was defeintely never boring。 I love Stephanie Garbers writing style, I love jacks and I love the caraval universe。

Oh boy, this book。 It started off so well, and ended so。。。 meh。 First, the good。 The book opens with such an enchanting fairy tale tone, and the description of the Northern Kingdom is so enthralling that I wanted to travel there myself immediately, see the icy spires and taste the dragon-roasted apples。But the story just doesn't deliver on the promise of its setting, and the longer it has to unfold, the more unravelled it becomes。Evangeline Fox is a Special Girl。 You can tell, because she has ro Oh boy, this book。 It started off so well, and ended so。。。 meh。 First, the good。 The book opens with such an enchanting fairy tale tone, and the description of the Northern Kingdom is so enthralling that I wanted to travel there myself immediately, see the icy spires and taste the dragon-roasted apples。But the story just doesn't deliver on the promise of its setting, and the longer it has to unfold, the more unravelled it becomes。Evangeline Fox is a Special Girl。 You can tell, because she has rose gold hair。 Not just pink -- rose gold。 She's an Instagram aesthetic's dream。 She works at her late father's magical curiosity shop, and is head over heels for a boy whose only attractive quality seems to be that he cares about her。 When Luc suddenly becomes engaged to Evangeline's mousy-shy stepsister, Evangeline becomes convinced that he's been cursed by her jealous stepmother, and she goes to make a deal with the Prince of Hearts in order to be reunited with her love。The Prince of Hearts is one of the Fates, you see, immortal beings who were trapped in tarot cards and are now free for。。。 some unspecified reason, and who have magic, and are cursed to live our a certain archetype。 The Prince of Hearts, or Jacks as he's called, is the archetype of a broken heart, and every girl he kisses will die unless she is his true love。The early book has a strong Cinderella vibe。 The opening is a bit rushed, as Evangeline makes a deal, faces the terrible consequences, sacrifices herself to end them, and then is rescued within the first couple of chapters, but it soon seems to be building to something solid again。 As part of her deal with Jacks, she must kiss three people of his choosing。 She is travelling to the magical North, where the prince will be throwing a ball every night until he proposes to his future bride。 It's an intriguing enough set-up。Yet there's simultaneously too much payoff and not enough。 Everything careens ahead, leaping from one story to the next。 She attends one ball and the prince proposes to her。 (view spoiler)[She agonises over the fact that the prince may be under a spell, but only for a few chapters, and then it's the wedding。 And then he's dead and she's on the run! And there's a prophecy about her Instagram-chic hair, and vampires, and more Fates, and the prince's potentially evil brother, and maybe her step-sister is a witch? The guards are looking for Evangeline but her Fate friends can control them so there's not really a threat, except when Evangeline is being an idiot and stumbles off into danger again。 (hide spoiler)] At 70%, 80%, 90%, things kept HAPPENING, but I had no idea what the finale of the book was going to be。 Nothing felt like it had been set up to pay off。 And so the end is anticlimactic as all hell。 The solution to the tensions is far too easy, the big "plot twist" was basically just revealed in the protagonist's wishy washy inner monologue, and the story simply stops, incredibly rushed yet incomplete, so it can say "sequel coming soon。"I started off really enjoying this one, but by the time I was three quarters of the way through, I couldn't stop rolling my eyes。 Evangeline is incredibly naive, and the only times she has any influence over what's happening around her are the times when she's REALLY messing things up。 She's just a pawn for the other characters, and that doesn't make for a very interesting protagonist。 The novel tries hard to address this and give her agency, but it's false agency, because she fundamentally is not in control or even really able to influence any of what's going on。 The book also seems to only have one type of female supporting character: the gushing, enthusiastic BFF。 The empress is like this。 Her warrior sister is like this。 Several immortal beings are like this。 The only one who isn't ENTIRELY like that is Evangeline's step-sister, and。。。 well。 She's a yo-yo of attempted plot twists, without actually having much of a convincing character herself。 The problem with the stepsister is actually a problem with much of the book -- the novel TELLS us that she's like THIS, that she acts a certain way because of THAT, but it doesn't trust us to reach any intelligent emotional conclusions ourselves。 To be fair, we probably can't reach those conclusions, because the novel is so over-crammed with STUFF that none of it really has space to mull or develop。And finally, there's the romance。 There was never any real HATE between Jacks and Evangeline, more her wariness of him as a predator and his indifference towards her。 Which means there might be an element of intrigue, but there's no heat。 There is minimal attraction。 Jacks starts to act more human and Evangeline softens towards him, but there's nothing between them that makes me think it would be super hot if they finally kissed, and no prospect of a healthy relationship, so I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to feel。 If it wasn't very obviously a key set-up trope of the book, I wouldn't believe in any romantic potential between them at all。 But that is very, very obviously where it's going, and one book in, things don't really feel any different than where they started。 He's dangerous。 He's a Fate。 She doesn't trust him。 So what? When I picked up this book, I was initially thinking it might be a new Cruel Prince, something dark and romantic and enchanting。 But it's not。 There are some good bones, but god is the execution disappointing。 。。。more

Well, I loved it! I find the elements that seduced me in "Caraval" without the story being identical either。 The story is extremely gripping, and the protagonist is endearing and different from many heroines。 At times, she is very naïve, but I forgive her easily, knowing she is 17 years old and confronted with certain emotions for the first time。On the other hand if you have not kept a child's soul, do not read the book😂! I loved Jacks so much, I’m so happy to be back in this universe。This is the story of Evangeline and Jacks, but obviously the story is so much more complexe than the two of them。 This is once again a journey in hope of finding a happily ever after, of curses, princes, fates and magic。This book went by so fast, and the ending left me wanting so much more。 This is going to be a struggle to wait for the next one。

4。5 stars。 My first of Stephanie Garber’s books, she knocked it out of park with this one。 Not to brag or anything, but I would let Jacks simply take my soul or whatever it is that Fates do。 The worldbuilding was fantastic, the dynamic between Jacks and Evangeline was fantastic, and just everything was fantastic。 I need the next book NOW!!!!

I love this circus-like magic atmosphere that Garber was able to create and keeps improving。 The book was really good, really fast to read, I was pretty hooked with everything。。。。I'm not sure what keeps me from giving it more stars, I just feel like on a personal level I don't love it so much。 Also everyday my preference for standalones improves greatly, I wanna say I'm going to read the next one, but to be real I don't know。 I love this circus-like magic atmosphere that Garber was able to create and keeps improving。 The book was really good, really fast to read, I was pretty hooked with everything。。。。I'm not sure what keeps me from giving it more stars, I just feel like on a personal level I don't love it so much。 Also everyday my preference for standalones improves greatly, I wanna say I'm going to read the next one, but to be real I don't know。 。。。more
